Description
Karabagh carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), South Caucasus, circa 1930-1950.
(Worn, frayed.)
Length: 155 cm; Width: 105 cm.
This carpet is decorated with two large central hexagonal medallions with geometric floral motifs on a black background. Small geometric motifs. Two borders with multicoloured geometric floral motifs surround the composition.
Karabagh means "black garden" and refers to a region in the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important weaving centre, with the creation of numerous factories, as early as the 17th century, under the impetus of Muslim and Christian craftsmen. During the 19th century, carpets were produced here using European-style roses based on French cartoons.
