Description
Karabagh carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), South Caucasus, circa 1930-1960. (Wear, old restorations, fraying, holes, missing and probably diminished). Length: 603 cm; Width: 182 cm. This large carpet is enhanced by a floral design with bouquets of roses on a black background. A wide black border with polychrome flower garlands surrounds the composition. Karabagh means "black garden" and refers to a region in the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important weaving centre, with the creation of numerous factories, as early as the 17th century, under the impetus of Muslim and Christian craftsmen. During the 19th century, carpets were produced here using European-style roses based on French cartoons. The presence of Kurdish and Armenian populations, especially around Shusha in the South Caucasus, contributed to the spread of Karabagh carpet weaving. Karabagh carpets are highly varied in their decoration. There are three types: - Small prayer rugs with an arrowhead-shaped mihrab decorated with multicoloured stripes, botehs or Persian-inspired floral designs; - An elongated carpet decorated with stylised botehs, palmettes, bouquets of roses and mina khani motifs (composed of large rounded flowers resembling daisies linked by stems. This motif is probably a Kurdish interpretation of the herati motif) or herati on a dark blue or red background; - Carpet decorated with a series of central hexagonal medallions with a white zigzag outline.
