Description
Dagestan carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), North-East Caucasus. Circa 1930-1960. (Slight wear and fraying.) Length: 262 cm; Width: 158 cm. This carpet is decorated with four ivory medallions with floral motifs surrounded by blue floral medallions on a navy blue background and enhanced with small rosettes. The main red border, decorated with a series of medallions framed by lancets, surrounds the composition. "The term Chirvan refers both to a type of carpet and to a region where a great many carpets are produced. It is a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a heterogeneous population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvan carpets are knotted in towns (Kouba, Daghestan, etc.) and villages (Tchi tchi, lesghi, seikour, Pérépédil.....). Bibliographical reference : - SABAHI, T - Splendeurs des tapis d'Orient, Éd.
