Description
Kazak Karatchof carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), South Caucasus, circa 1880-1900.
(Wear, old restorations, frayed and probably diminished).
Length: 228 cm; Width: 172 cm.
The carpet is decorated with a large central red octagon within which is another polychrome octagon and framed by four small ivory medallions, all on a light blue background with polychrome geometric motifs. A wide red border with a succession of small blue, green and ivory geometric squares is framed by two counter-borders.
Despite the diversity of its population, the carpets of the Caucasus have always displayed an astonishing unity of style. The colours are clear and bold, and the designs are assertive, leaning towards pure geometries. Behind this unity lie two influences that were not merely cultural: Ottoman Turkey, which controlled the western and central parts of the country, and Persia under the Sefevids (1501-1722), which once controlled the whole of Azerbaijan. The carpets of the Kazak region, in the centre of the Caucasus, often reproduce designs from ancient Turkish carpets, preserving their memory in much the same way as a language preserves certain stages of its history in remote regions.
