Description
Large double flintlock pistol bearing the royal arms, by Cazes, arquebusier to the King. Round barrels, rifled, signed "CAZES Arquebusier du Roi A Paris", with thunderbolts engraved on the underside with a radiant face. Dogs engraved with sea creatures and, on the upper jaws, thunderbolts and clouds. Chest engraved on the sides with an artilleryman and his piece and men carrying a wounded man. Security button on the back of the hammers. The underside of the box engraved with the Arms of France surmounted by a cock and in a cartouche of a gun. Tail of trigger guard engraved with a smoking grenade and trophy of arms. Marbled walnut stock carved with roses at the breech. Silver cap with lion's head decoration. B.E. circa 1780. Length: 28 cm. Jean Cazes, King's harquebusier, active in 1784, at 71, rue des Fossés Monsieur le Prince. He made rifles for the royal hunts.
