Rare Le Mat percussion revolver, ten shots, 9 rifled shots in 44 caliber and one smooth shot in 16 mm caliber.
Barrel with sides, engraved and signed on the top in Gothic letters "Système Le Mat Bte SGDG à Paris", struck with the thunder "2285", punch "LM" spangled. Steel loading rod on the left side. Plain barrel with the same number, with English proof marks. Hound with head splitting to be able to draw the central cartridge, punched "N". Open frame stamped "2285", trigger stamped with the same number. Steel trigger guard. Varnished walnut stock plates.

Biography: Jean Alexandre Frans LE MAT (1824-1881), doctor in New Orleans, colonel in the Confederate army, he filed patents from 1856-1857 for percussion revolvers. Le Mat revolvers, tested in the American army, were judged superior to Colt revolvers. The first Le Mat revolvers were produced in the United States, then in Europe.
