Description
Brunswick model 1886 officer's helmet attributed to Lieutenant Wolfgang Vollrath, killed at Saint Prix on 9 September 1914. Patent leather shell. Plate, four-star base with screw-on tip (slightly skewed) and black horsehair haarbrusch (probably added later). Silver plated brass skull and crossbones plate motif (wear), inside eye sockets lined with black cloth (remains). Leather-lined scale chinstraps. Officer's cockades in Reich and Brunswick colours. Moire headdress and leather headband. Antique Paul Dubure collection label with annotation in pen "Helmet of Lieutenant Vollrath of the 92nd Brunswick Infantry Regiment. Bataille de la Marne Sept 1914" and label from the René and Claude Gobier collection. B.E. This model of helmet was used by the 3rd Battalion of the 92nd Brunswick Infantry Regiment, with the other two battalions being equipped from 1912 onwards. History: Lieutenant Wolfgang Vollrath, who was killed at St-Prix on 9 September 1914, is buried in Connantre cemetery. He is listed in the book "Gechichte des Braunschweigischen Infanterie-Regiments Nr. 92 im Weltkriege 1914-1918", p. 570, as the regiment's 7th officer killed in action during the war, two of his fellow officers being killed at St-Prix during the Battle of Marais Saint-Gond.
