Description
DOGON - MALI - Probably late 19th-early 20th century Crest mask, crocodile with sawtooth jaw Wood, old natural patina Size: 15 x 49 x 19 cm (woodworm wear and missing) Note: Among the Dogon, masks linked to animal forms refer to the forces of nature and beings associated with water. The crocodile, found in wetlands, is included in the repertoire of masks as an ambivalent figure, both feared and protective. Some traditions report that the creation of crocodile masks is linked to stories of confrontation with the animal, whose image is then fixed to protect the group and channel its power. More broadly, Dogon masks, used in the ceremonies of the Awa society, embody natural or animal entities and take part in rituals linked to the cycles of life and the ancestors.
