Description
Brass arithmometer with bone knobs Engraved stamp "Invented by Mr. Thomas DE COLMAR in Paris" on the device comprising 8 cursors, 16 digits and cranks Blackened wooden case with brass inlays Dim: 9.5 x 57 x 17 cm (accidents and missing parts on the case)
Note: Mr Thomas DE COLMAR created the Arithmometer in 1820, the first mechanical calculating machine to be produced industrially. His invention used Leibniz's cylinder to automate arithmetic operations. The user enters numbers using cursors, then turns a crank to perform the calculations automatically. The machine performed additions and subtractions directly, while multiplications and divisions were performed by mechanically repeating these operations.
