This allegory symbolising the heroic France defeated by Prussia in 1871 was created by the star sculptor of the Third Republic, Antonin Mercié (1845-1916). First produced in plaster at the Villa Medici in 1872, Gloria victis quickly became a success, being reproduced in bronze in its actual size (220 cm), or reduced and published in dozens of copies.
