Description
A box known as a ‘pot-pourri’ box In gold lacquer on a black background with a gold foliage decoration, with a chiselled and gilded bronze mount in the Transition style. The oval-shaped box with a band is adorned with a frieze of openwork posts. It rests on four Greek-style feet and is fitted with ring-shaped side handles decorated with lion’s muzzles. Late 18th century H. 19.5 cm – W. 21 cm – D. 12 cm. (Signs of wear) Provenance: Christie’s Paris auction, 5 May 2011, lot No. 548. A comparable pot-pourri in red lacquer is held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and illustrated in: Bruno Pons, *Grands décors français 1650–1800*, Faton, Paris, 1995, p. 419.
