Jacques-Charles Chartier, who was admitted as a master craftsman in 1760, ran a cabinetmaker’s and mirror-maker’s business on Rue Saint-Antoine, near Rue Royale; he died in 1782, after which his widow continued the business.
Joseph Gengenbach, known as CANABAS (1715–1795), set up shop in 1755 on Rue de Charonne as a ‘privileged craftsman’, that is to say, authorised to produce furniture but not to stamp it. In this capacity, he supplied Oeben and Migeon as an independent craftsman. He was admitted to the Guild in 1766.
The presence of a crossed-out Canabas hallmark, alongside that of Chartier, is a relatively rare but documented phenomenon in 18th-century Parisian cabinetmaking. Chartier ran a cabinetmaker-and-glassmaker’s business, acting both as a cabinetmaker and as a dealer. He probably acquired a piece of furniture or a component already made by Canabas, then finished it, altered it or simply sold it under his own name. In some cases, the original mark was struck out before the new one was applied.
