Description
Gilded bronze table clock featuring the Chariot of Love Depicting Eros, holding a torch, standing on a chariot drawn by two butterflies, symbolising the union of Eros and Psyche. The white enamelled dial features Roman numerals for the hours, a railway-track minute track and Arabic numerals for the quarter-hours. The base is richly decorated with cornucopias, dragons, greyhounds and winged female figures. The whole rests on four spindle-shaped feet adorned with godrons. Mechanical movement with manual winding by key. The balance wheel was originally wire-sprung but has been replaced by a blade. Empire period, circa 1800–1810. H.: 44 – W.: 33 – D.: 13 cm. (Small chip to the enamel beneath a winding square; hammer restoration).
