Description
Giuseppe Domenico GRANDI (1843–1891/94), after Marshal Ney, full-length Bronze cast with a brown patina Titled on the plinth H.: 33 cm. At the age of 13, he began an apprenticeship with a marble craftsman, where he remained for several years before enrolling at the Brera Academy in Milan. After a spell in Turin, he returned to Milan to continue his artistic studies at the Accademia Albertina, under the Swiss-Italian sculptor Vincenzo Vela. He then joined the Scapigliati, a group of young avant-garde Milanese artists who advocated anti-academicism in art and an exploration of the reflection of light. As part of this movement, Giuseppe Grandi created vivid and dynamic sculptures, devoid of any romanticism, whose surfaces—with their hollows and rough textures—capture and reflect light.
