The watercolour treatment enhanced with white gouache to emphasise supernatural and mystical effects, as well as the ornamentation, which is both decorative and complexly symbolic, and certain motifs (the scent of perfume, the irises, the lower band with the woman with outstretched hands, the mystical perspective in the distance) are typical of Schwabe and can be compared with the illustrations for L'Évangile de l'enfance by Catulle Mendès (1892-1894) and Le Rêve by Zola (1891-1892).
While the subject, perhaps inspired by some of the animations at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, in particular the Khmer costumes, is new to the known oeuvre, the virtuoso technique of the watercolour drawing and the composition are very characteristic of the artist.
