Youri Pavlovitch ANNENKOV known as Georges ANNENKOFF (Petropavlovsk, 1889 - Paris, 1974) Set of two costume designs, a doctor probably for Max Ophüls' film "Lola Montès" by Max Ophüls, and a suite of three figures in the Renaissance style. Suite of two drawings, unsigned, pencil, watercolour, gouache and glitter highlights, one annotated "Doctor". annotated "doctor". H. 31 x W. 13 and 33.5 cm (as seen). H. 48 x W. 68.5 cm (frame). Provenance - Maria Samoïlovna Davydova (Saint Petersburg, 1889 - Paris, 1987) known as Maroussia Davidova, Russian mezzo-soprano, famous in the role of "Carmen" and as a partner of Fédor Chaliapine (1873-1938), also a friend of Valentina Ivanovna Motyleva, wife of Georges Annenkov (1889-1974). - Then given to the current vendor's father. History Maria Samoïlovna Davydova was a Russian mezzo-soprano born in Saint Petersburg who was active on the Russian and then European opera stages. She made her debut before the Revolution, took part in Diaghilev's Russian Seasons and sang in Boris Godounov, Khovanchtchina, The Queen of Spades and Carmen, a role with which her name remains particularly associated. After leaving the USSR, she continued her career in Paris, where she was known as Maroussia Davidova, and in several major European cities. She is also known as the stage partner of Fédor Chaliapine (1873-1938), with whom she helped to make the Russian repertoire known abroad. According to a family handwritten note, she was also a friend of Valentina Ivanovna Motyleva, a ballet dancer and wife of the painter Georges Annenkov.
