The Franco-Polish artist Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014) was born in Oederan, Saxony, and grew up near Kraków. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he was a pupil of Tadeusz Kantor, before moving to Paris in 1968 to continue his training at the École des Beaux-Arts. His solo exhibition in Paris in 1976 marked a turning point in his career. In 1983, he set up his studio in Pietrasanta, Tuscany, whilst maintaining close ties with Paris. This philosophical sculptor, steeped in classical antiquity, took pleasure in giving form to the imperfection of human nature through his truncated, broken or cracked statues, symbolising both the impermanence of existence and the mutilation of the soul. This bronze torso depicting Asclepius is undoubtedly his most popular work.
