Description
TAPESTRY
A significant Aubusson tapestry, woven by the Pinton Brothers’ workshops around 1955
Jean Lurcat (1892–1966)
Title: ‘The Entangled Sphinx’.
Dimensions: 153 cm high x 248 cm wide. (area: 3.80 m²)
Bolduc on the reverse
No. 7070 (the number on the Bolduc is most likely the workshop’s production/design number)
443 (to the right of the ribbon: another handwritten reference on the ribbon, probably corresponding to a production or workshop reference).
Polychrome wool, plain weave.
Good overall condition
The colours are particularly vibrant and the ribbon is very well preserved
Black ground featuring a monumental sphinx/butterfly with yellow and black wings, entangled in a network of stylised plants and flowers framed by finely drawn golden-yellow and ruby-red leaves.
Signed by Lurcat, bottom left, accompanied by the mark of Pinton, frères.
This ‘entangled Sphinx’ design appears to be significantly less common on the market than the green and yellow Sphinx designs.
Comparisons in museums:
The Jean-Lurcat Museum of Contemporary Tapestry in Angers.
The Louvre Museum.
The Bargoin Museum in Clermont-Ferrand.
The Mobilier National (Galerie des Gobelins)
An iconographic comparison can be found in *Champagne* (1959), featuring a monumental butterfly, highly stylised vegetation and the same principle of bold, decorative forms.
Jean Lurcat was particularly inspired by butterflies during his trip to Brazil in 1954.
Dimensions: 155 × 250 cm
