Engraved edge: GOD PROTECTS FRANCE Ref: G.578c Condition: almost Superb This unique coin began its life as a commemorative piece marking Napoleon’s visit to the Hôtel des Monnaies on 21 Ventôse, Year 11. It was subsequently re-engraved, either by Dupré himself or by one of his associates, to refer to a monetary competition in Year 10. This imaginary competition is thought to allude to the machinations of Napoleon and Tiolier, which made the new appointment a foregone conclusion, even before artistic or technical merits were considered.
