Description
POLAND Bronze medal, 1862, commemorating the opening of the Warsaw–Bromberg railway line, AE 172.44 g, 72 mm, by R. Michaux. Obverse: Steam locomotive moving to the left, with a plume of steam above. Engraver’s name on the rail Reverse: Text in twelve lines beneath a star. Ref: HCz 7971, Moyaux 387 (bronze) Grading: PCGS SP 65 Condition: FDC and rare This medal pays tribute to Herman Epstein (1806–1867), a key financier in the development of the Polish railway network. He helped finance the Warsaw–Vienna and Warsaw–Bromberg lines through his negotiations with the Rothschild Bank in Frankfurt. Knighted for his services, he served on the boards of both companies towards the end of his career.
