Description
RUSSIA Bronze medal Locomotive / Central Asian Exhibition, 1891, Issued to commemorate the Central Asian Exhibition in Moscow, AE 40 mm By A. Gebhardt Obverse: A caravan of camels moving to the left in the foreground; on the right, a locomotive approaching; the whole set within a multi-lobed frame with ornamental decoration and Arabic inscriptions in the spandrels; ΙΛ9Ι below. Reverse: СРЄДНЄ-АЗIАТСКАѦ ВЫСТАВКА ВЪ МОСКВѢ / 1891 ГОДА, with the crowned coats of arms of Turkestan and Moscow, all set upon a crowned ermine mantling. Ref: Diakov-1061.2 Edge: TTB. Beautiful warm brown patina. Quite RARE and of a very exotic style. ‘Turkestan’ refers to a region of Central Asia under the rule of the Russian Empire. The 1891 exhibition focused primarily on its natural resources. The railway depicted is probably the Trans-Caspian rather than the Trans-Siberian.
