Louis-Philippe I 1830–1848 THE ROYAL FAMILY’S VISIT TO THE PARIS MINT IN 1833, AG 237 g. This large medal, with a diameter of 75 mm, was engraved by Jacques Jean BARRE before he took over as acting Chief Engraver from Tiolier in 1840 and was himself appointed Chief Engraver in 1842. It is undoubtedly his technical masterpiece, featuring eleven portraits across both sides (two on the obverse and nine on the reverse), thus narrowly beating his previous record of ten figures on the medal commemorating the Coronation of Charles X (one on the obverse and nine on the reverse). Ref: To date, it has been described without any variants and therefore under a single reference (CGEMP2, pp. 138–93; Collignon, p. 219). Condition: Extremely Rare and Superb. This medal exists in at least two varieties resulting from two different obverse dies and two almost identical reverse dies, which differ only in the spelling of the abbreviation of the word ‘D’ORLEANS’ as either ‘D’ORL’ or ‘DO’RL’. Our specimen is a variant of medal no. 3059 from the Kunker 422 sale in March 2025 and differs from it in that it bears no hallmark. In 1832, the medal mint and the coin mint were merged. It was then decided to engrave a hallmark featuring an antique lamp on the edge of the medals. However, in the early stages of this change, some medals may not have been hallmarked, having slipped past the inspectors’ attention.
