Description
CYPRIS by Léon Claude MASCAUX (1882–1965). Gilt type (110 mm) published in 1925. Obverse: Aphrodite seated on the right, holding a flower clasped by a small winged Eros. Reverse: A nude Aphrodite in a boat with Eros rowing, above a Greek inscription: KΥΠΡI ΜHƬHΡ ΠΟΘΩΝ ΑΕΛΛΟΠOΔΩΝ Copy no. 85, Maier 312. Condition: A rare and very fine Art Deco medal issued to mark the Society’s first year. Superb. The SFAM was founded in 1925 by Jean Babelon, Pierre d’Espezel and the engraver Marcel Dammann with the aim of restoring the medal’s status as a work of art following the First World War. It distinguished itself through the exclusive use of double-sided casting and an aesthetic strongly influenced by Art Deco. Active until 1965, it championed the sculptor’s medal for forty years, featuring artists such as Drivier, Gaumont and Belmondo.
