Description
CONSTRUCTION OF THE PARISIAN METRO Silver plaque (90 x 70 mm) by Frédéric VERNON, signed and dated 1912, AG 265.41 g. Obverse: The city of Paris, showing the capital to Fulgence Bienvenue (the Opéra, the Saint-Jacques Tower, the Basilica of Montmartre, etc. are clearly visible). Reverse: A crowd of passengers from the upper middle class gathered around a metro carriage. Work on tunnelling began in 1896 and the first line entered service in July 1900. It was not until 1920 that this monumental project was completed. Condition: Very rare and superb, in a case bearing the coat of arms of the City of Paris.
