Description
CITROËN RAID – MISSION GM HAARDT, AUDOUIN-DUBREUIL. Single-sided bronze cast with a silver-coloured patina (270 mm), signed H. BOUCHARD, undated but produced in 1923. The first motorised crossing of the Sahara, from Touggourt to Timbuktu, was the first of three Citroën expeditions, the next two of which (the ‘Croisière Noire’ and the ‘Croisière Jaune’) received much greater media coverage. Henri Bouchard received only one commission for a medal (9 cm in diameter) intended solely for the participants in the crossing. It was struck by Janvier Berchot in a very limited edition (31 copies) and produced by mechanically reducing a cast of 27 cm in diameter. It is this cast that is featured here. It is illustrated on page 50 of issue no. 61 (2007) of the journal *Cytopolis* and was produced in a run of eight copies by L. Thinot, a foundryman in Paris. Copy no. 2/8. Condition: Superb and extremely rare
