EMILE ZOLA by Alexandre CHARPENTIER (1856–1909). Single-sided bronze casting (approximately 175 x 135 mm) depicting a bust of the famous writer facing right. In the field, 19 March 1898 and the artist’s monogram. A rare and significant work by Charpentier, who produced many pieces for Émile Zola. Having created a medal for the newspaper *Le Siècle*, which was sold by subscription from 15 March 1898 (the famous ‘J’accuse’ having appeared in *L’Aurore* on 13 January), Charpentier thus produced, in the style of his famous sketch portraits, a work that is less academic and far more vivid than the medal honouring Zola.
