Description
THE VIRGIN AND THE CHILD JESUS by MODERNO A rare and very beautiful medallion (115 x 70 mm) with a bronze cast eyelet showing traces of silver plating and gilding, depicting the Virgin, surrounded by a halo, offering her left breast to the Infant Jesus, who is turning away; behind her, Saint Joseph holding a cross. In the background, ten male figures, four of whom are looking towards the sky, where two angels are holding a crown above the Virgin. Architectural frame with, in the tympanum of the pediment, God the Father and a cherub. In the plinth, decorated with palmettes, is a shield bearing the coat of arms of the Medici. Ref: Auction XXVIII Joseph Hirsch, Munich, 1910, lot 335. Bode, *Die Italienischen Bronzen*, Volume II, Berlin 1904, no. 735 (without the pediment). Molinier, *Les bronzes de la Renaissance – Les Plaquettes*, Volume I, pp. 119, 162. Paris, 1886. Von Moltheim, 29 (gilded bronze) Condition: Original cast of exceptional quality. Very good to superb. Inventory number in ink on the reverse. A very fine example with the background fully intact; Molinier notes that this is executed in very low relief and has been entirely lost in many examples of this plaque.
