Description
PIETÀ. Anonymous single-sided bronze casting (186 x 130 mm), undated. A masterpiece of the Northern Italian Mannerist school of the late 16th century, this Pietà was, in its day, one of the most famous religious images in Europe. It has been attributed to as many artists as there are variants—if not more! We shall refer to the most recent attribution, that of Francesco Rossi in *La collezione Mario Scaglia – Placchette*. Lubrina Ed., Bergamo, 2011. Francesco Rossi demonstrates that the variants derive from a prototype with a plain background, lacking any city, landscape or part of the cross, and featuring a skull and pincers on the ground (Scaglia, plate LIX, and the Morgenroth Collection, Chicago, 1944, no. 186). Our specimen appears to be variant C, featuring a view of Jerusalem, part of the cross and, additionally, the crown of thorns on the ground (an example of the same dimensions in the Lobbecke Collection, Schulman 1929, no. 402).
