DESCENT FROM THE CROSS: Kiss of Peace, cast in bronze (119 × 77 mm) with its original handle. The dead Christ lies on the lap of the Virgin Mary, accompanied by Mary Magdalene, whilst Saint John supports Christ’s head. This scene is depicted between two columns surmounted by a pediment adorned with a cherub. Below, the coat of arms of a cardinal. Ref: The Louvre Museum holds a specimen of exactly the same dimensions (OA 2822, bequeathed by Baron Davillier in 1883). Molinier II, p. 74, no. 464. Bergbauer, p. 78, no. 38. Malgouyres, p. 335, no. 233. Condition: Very good. Italian Renaissance-period cast. The ‘kiss of peace’, or osculatory, is a Catholic liturgical object used before communion to convey peace. Usually decorated with a religious scene, it has almost disappeared today, having been replaced by a simple fraternal gesture. From the 16th to the 18th century, leading medallists created some remarkable examples.
