Description
THE KISS OF PEACE in Michelangelo’s Pietà. Gilded bronze plaque (12.9 x 8.65 cm) by or after Ludovico del Duca (1551–1601). Handle removed and superb gilded bronze frame ‘à la Sansovino’ (Jacopo Sansovino – Florence 1486, Venice 1570). Behind the body of Christ, supported by two cherubs, the Mater Dolorosa raises her hands towards the heavens. In the background, the Cross, the sun and the moon. Ref: Adams Collection (Bonhams 1996) 105 – Bange 945 – Mickael Riddick, ‘Michelangelo’s Pietà in bronze’, fig. 11: same frame as this example (23-page article available on request). Condition: period plaque, frame and gilding. A very fine example of this famous work. Venice, late 16th century, early 17th century.
