Description
Bronze medal, George III saved from an assassination attempt, 1800, AE 28.27 g. 38 mm By P. Kempson Obverse: a crown within a garland, with a halo above; the inscription ‘PRESERVED FROM ASSASSINA­ TION’ above, ‘MAY 15, 1800’ below; a ribbon bearing the inscription ‘GOD GIVE PRAISE’. Reverse: an angel kneeling on a cloud holding the king’s portrait, protected by a shield against arrows; inscription ‘GOD SAVE THE KING’. Ref: BHM 486 Condition: TTB, dents on the edge This medal commemorates the failed assassination attempt of 15 May 1800, when a former soldier, later found to be of unsound mind, fired at the King as he was entering his box at Drury Lane Theatre to watch a comedy.
