Description

MINER by CONSTANTIN MEUNIER (1831–1905). A rare and impressive single-sided cast (35 x 26.5 cm) depicting the bust of a miner in profile facing left. Around the age of 50, Constantin Meunier turned away from religious painting in favour of a social and realistic portrayal of the working class. This is evident in this large bas-relief cast depicting the calm and resigned face of an underground miner. Reproduced on p. 80 in *Constantin Meunier and his work*. Ed. de la Plume, 1905.
