URBINO A majolica dish (tondino) bearing a coat of arms, with a full-colour polychrome decoration depicting a historical scene illustrating an episode from the legend of Cyrus, taken from Herodotus’ account: soldiers present the head of Cyrus in a sack, against a landscape background dominated by a large draped tapestry adorned with a coat of arms belonging to the families of Johannes Horwarth and Helen Schellenberg. Inscription on the reverse: “Caput Ciri in sacco inis utria obruitur”. (The head of Cyrus is shown in a sack). Attributed to Guido di Merlino. First half of the 16th century, circa 1540–1550 Diameter 26.3 cm AJ Previous restoration to two reattached chips and other chips. History: Johannes Horwarth and Helen Schellenberg belonged to two very wealthy merchant families from Augsburg and Nuremberg who maintained flourishing trade relations with Italy. Thirteen pieces bearing identical coats of arms exist, one of which is held at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (Inv. WA1947.191.263), three at the VAM in London (Inv.
