Description
*La Grande Helvétie*, a rare piece of panoramic wallpaper, manufactured by Zuber, original edition from 1815, a print from the Restoration period, polychrome woodblock print on spliced paper, sky-blue brushed background, design by Pierre-Antoine Mongin (1761–1827), who from 1804 onwards created the large panoramic landscape designs for Zuber’s early works. Panel featuring nine of the twenty strips that make up the complete design, offering a picturesque view of Switzerland, as described in an advertising text published in 1815. From left to right: a gathering in traditional costume sharing a snack in a clearing; some ‘Swiss men demonstrate their strength by carrying stones of considerable weight’. The strip depicting a herd of goats at the foot of a tree forms the link to the following panel, which does not connect directly. Depicting the haymaking festival by a lake, the promotional text states: ‘in order to be able to depict almost all Swiss costumes, it was assumed that friends and relatives from different cantons had gathered for this festival’. The reference work listing panoramic backdrops preserved by institutions and in situ identifies only five examples of this backdrop worldwide, with just one each in Switzerland and France.
