China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century A ‘Miao’ accordion-fold album containing 72 ink-and-colour paintings on paper depicting men and women of the Miao ethnic group engaged in various activities within landscapes, with a paragraph of calligraphic text on each page, bound between wooden covers, the title in black ink almost completely faded, probably ‘Miao man tu 苗蠻圖’, and a more recent inscription comprising four characters. W. 29.2 cm – H. 26.3 cm (LDM) Water stains, wormholes. The pages have come loose. The ‘Miao man tu’ or ‘Bai miao tu’ are a genre of illustrated Chinese ethnographic albums, produced mainly during the Qing dynasty, which combined paintings and descriptive texts to depict the life, customs and traditional dress of the ethnic minorities of south-west China, particularly the Miao people (whose name is sometimes used to refer to these ethnic groups as a whole). Often commissioned by Han or Manchu nobles, these albums reflect the contemporary view of these peoples living on the ‘frontiers’ of the empire.
