19th-century Italian School Saint Januarius of Benevento or San Gennaro A gilded and silver-plated bronze cast depicting a bust of the saint wearing his mitre set with cabochons and a cope of silk and silver thread, the base is adorned with a bas-relief scene depicting the saint’s martyrdom; the whole rests on four arched feet with volutes, decorated with garlands and putti H. 59 cm – W. 27 cm – D. 21 cm Signs of wear to the patina and damage to the cope Provenance: Estate of Mr X, Rome, Italy Related work: This bust was modelled on the reliquary bust of San Gennaro housed in the Royal Chapel of the Treasury within Naples Cathedral and commissioned by King Charles II of Anjou in 1305.
