Description
IZNIK Square wall tile, made of siliceous clay, decorated with polychrome enamels and red engobe beneath a colourless transparent glaze, depicting a turquoise ‘saz’ palm frond surrounded by wild rose branches. Ottoman art, second half of the 16th century, circa 1575–1580. 24.5 cm x 24 cm x 1.5 cm AJ Firing defects and restorations. This type of tile belongs to a well-known group of Iznik tiles, several of which are assembled into panels. Similar examples are held at the Louvre Museum in Paris (seven tiles, Inv. AA405/1 to AA405/7), the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (Inv. 401:1 to 24-1900), LACMA (Inv. M.85.237.86a–d) and the David Collection in Copenhagen.
