Japan, 19th century Tantō, with an aikuchi-koshirae-style hilt (without a tsuba), its handle (tsuka) made of black-braided stingray skin and decorated with a pair of partially gilded shakudo menuki depicting Ebisu’s cap and fishing rod, the saya is finished in black ishime-ji nuri lacquer, with a kogatana featuring a kozuka made of an alloy (shakudo or shibuichi) with a nanako background decorated with a gilded shishi and peony, and a blade bearing an incised Kusa no karakuri motif (a dragon encircling a ken, in cursive style) and an apocryphal Umetada signature; the blade is of the kanmuri-otoshi-zukuri type, showing traces of oxidation, with jihada and an illegible hamon; the nakago bears the signature: Aizu ju Muneji 會津住宗二 (Muneji, resident of Aizu) - Munetoshi II 二代宗壽- and the date: Tenpô ni Udoshi nigatsu no hi 天保二卯年二月日 (2nd month of the 2nd year of the Tenpô era – i.e. 1831).
