Frédéric BOUCHERON (1830–1902), based on a design attributed to his workshop master Paul LEGRAND (1840–1910) A sugar bowl in 950/000 vermeil silver, decorated with polychrome cloisonné enamels depicting Japanese-style landscapes within medallions and geometric motifs. The handle is shaped like a shishi. A ‘Fic BOUCHERON PARIS’ hallmark on the lid and beneath the base, the latter accompanied by an engraved design of floral scrolls. Minerve Premier Titre hallmark and Master Goldsmith’s mark “FB à la colonne” for Frédéric Boucheron. H. 10 cm W. 14 cm Gross weight: 420 g. Minor losses to the enamel. Frédéric Boucheron (1830–1902) incorporated Japanese influences into his designs, echoing the aesthetics of the Meiji era (1868–1912), which proved highly successful. This richly decorated sugar bowl can be attributed to Paul Legrand (1840–1910), Boucheron’s principal designer from 1863 until around 1900 and a leading proponent of Japonism. Boucheron marketed several pieces inspired by Japonism, which critics praised for “their picturesque and highly original imagination, a charming whim of an artist enamoured of this strange art form, where even the most daring eccentricity excludes neither grace nor elegance.” (Marius Vachon in ‘Exposition du métal à l’Union centrale’ in the *Gazette des Beaux-Arts* (1880), referring to a Japonism-style night light presented by Boucheron and designed by Legrand).
