"The son of Carle Van Loo, Jules-César Van Loo followed in the family tradition by becoming a painter in his own right. He won the Prix de Rome in 1767 while a boarder at the Académie de France. An Academician from 1784, Van Loo specialised in landscapes. He painted particularly snowy compositions inspired by his experience of the Alps and often enlivened by scenes of life."
