Carnets de voyage en Italie 1921-1922. Paris, Jacques Beltrand, 1925. Large in-4, bound in full morocco with slipcase. Minor restoration to be expected on the slipcase. Superb binding protected by a half chestnut morocco folder with bands, smooth spine with title. Bound in havana morocco decorated on the boards and the spine in continuity with Corinthian style columns made of gilt fillets and cold fillets, moire endpapers and back covers in the same tone as the binding. Bound by Georges Cretté, successor to Marius Michel.
One of Maurice Denis's great painter's books, he publishes here notes and watercolours taken from life, admirably engraved by the Beltrand brothers. Slight smudging of some wood on the facing page, some scattered spotting particularly on the first 4 leaves.
The notebooks cover Sicily, Rome, Siena and Florence in 1921 and Venice and Padua in 1922. Edition of 175 copies on Arche vellum, this one numbered 137. 34 wood-engraved compositions in colour, 4 of which are full-page.
Rare in such a well-established binding.
