Description
Dominique Antoine MAGAUD (1817–1899) Allegories of the Rhône flowing into the Mediterranean, HST SBD dated 1854, 97 x 140 cm.
Provenance: private collection, Marseille. Traditionally, this work is said to have come from the Marseille Opera House (opened in 1787) and was saved from the fire of 1919. See also: Ceilings and allegorical subjects executed in Marseille by Magaud.
A renowned painter, Magaud created several interior designs for major cafés in both Paris and Marseille and fulfilled numerous prestigious commissions. A member of the Marseille Academy, Magaud was also Director of the School of Fine Arts, training several leading figures of the Provençal school, including Jean-Baptiste Olive.
