Description
Porcelain plate depicting a Virgin and Child or Madonna and Child after a follower of Raphael. The Virgin Mary, facing three-quarters to the left and with her head bowed, is dressed in a red dress with blue drapery, carrying the infant Jesus standing on her lap. He is turned three-quarters to the right and his head bent to the left, holding one of the Virgin's fingers in one hand and a lock of her hair in the other. In the background, a mountainous landscape features a building on the right-hand side. Signed "M Legrand" lower right. Gilded wood frame. 19th century. 52.5 x 40.5 cm Bears an old label marked "50", stuck at the top left and partially torn. This porcelain plate is an identical reproduction of an undated painting attributed to a follower of Raphael and held in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. 506), from the collection of Elector Karl Theodore (1724-1799). It is of a high quality of execution and can be compared to those painted at the Manufacture de Sèvres between 1817 and 1848, but it does not bear their mark and the Manufacture's archives do not mention either the author, "M. Legrand", or the subject. Although the Manufacture de Sèvres was the most important producer of these paintings on porcelain, other private manufacturers were able to rival it and produce plates of equivalent quality, such as Dihl in Paris with the painter Étienne-Charles Le Guay. The painters responsible for transcribing these paintings onto porcelain were not always attached to a single factory. They could work for several of them, sometimes on their own account, collaborating in particular "en extraordinaire" with the Sèvres factory depending on the orders they received.
