Description
SOUVENIR OF THE GRAND TOUR Attributed to Bartolomeo PALEOTTI (1757–1834) and Pietro PALEOTTI (1801–1847) A set of plaster casts of cameos, housed in two flat rectangular wooden boxes, each containing a set of oval and round plaster cameos, modelled on ancient and Renaissance designs, framed by cardboard edged with a gold fillet. Italy, c. 1800–1820. H. 37 x W. 24.5 cm (boxes). Background These plaster cameos were among the souvenirs brought back by young European travellers on their ‘Grand Tour’, a journey undertaken to round off their education by visiting the major European collections and ancient sites. Rome was the highlight of this journey. These plaster cameos depict architectural features and works of art found in Italy, particularly in Rome, but also in Florence and Milan: they serve not only as a memento of these visits but also as a valuable ‘reminder’ of the mythologies, gods and historical events depicted.
