Description
William WYLD (London 1806 - Paris 1889) Interior of an English drawing room Partially gouache watercolour over black pencil lines 43.5 x 31 cm Small cracks and traces of glue around the edges, palette in the lower margin Provenance : Workshop sale stamp lower right (L.2587b) Born in London in 1806, Wyld came to work in France at an early age. His mastery of the language is evident from the many inscriptions, in both French and English, that litter his sketches and drawings. He first worked in Calais as a diplomat, and took up watercolour painting under the tutelage of François-Louis-Thomas Francia (1772-1839). Encouraged by his entourage, he decided to devote himself entirely to his passion. With his friend Horace Vernet (1789-1863), he travelled through Algeria and Italy, sketching numerous landscapes along the way, of which we are presenting a major collection. From then on, he travelled constantly, and seems to have visited the whole of Europe. The dates and locations regularly indicated on his drawings are precious clues to the stages of his travels. He was recognised for his dexterity, particularly in the art of watercolour, and for the "vigour of the impression" that emanates from it. Some of his paintings were already acquired by museums even before his studio was sold on 30 May 1890 in Paris. The watercolours and drawings we are presenting, discovered in the attic of a château in Puisaye, are studies made on the spot (as evidenced by the mounting of the sheets and the old accidents). They were working documents for the artist, for some of which we have found the corresponding painted pictures. Most of the sheets marked with the stamp of the sale of his studio were probably included in lots 122 and 123 of the sale, comprising "unframed watercolours" and "sketches".
