Louis FRANCIA (Calais 1772-1839) Sailors repairing their boats on the beach at Sangatte Watercolour, pen and brown ink 21.6 x 29.8 cm Annotated on verso in pen and brown ink "Sangatte au Vin du Blannez ou blanc nez ou proprement dit. Sand-Gate which means the sand barrier L.Francia". Insolate, stained and worn Attached are nine miscellaneous drawings by the English school A specialist in depictions of storms and shipwrecks, Francia probably gave this watercolour to William Wyld, whom he met at the British consulate in Calais, when Wyld had just moved to France. He trained him in watercolour landscape painting, which was to become Wyld's favourite technique.
