Decorated with petit fer, silver-plated metal clasp

Originally from Toulouse, Marie-Joseph Massol (1773-1838) joined the revolutionary troops in 1790. He rose through the ranks and continued his service under Napoleon I, joining the Imperial Guard. He distinguished himself and took part in the battles of Eylau, Jena and Wagram, among others. Massol continued his military career under the Restoration, and was promoted to colonel in the 19th line infantry regiment in 1821, until his retirement in 1823. He died in his home town in 1838.
