Description
Five natural wood "antechamber chairs", early 19th century With slatted legs and openwork cabriole backs carved with medallions of flowers centring Ionic columns. Accents, restorations H. 84 L. 41 cm In Paris, in the last third of the 18th century, the reigning Anglomania led to the triumph of openwork and carved backs, known as "à l'anglaise". A variety of decorations were created, fashioned in particular by Georges Jacob. This craze continued at the beginning of the following century, as illustrated by Pierre de La Mésangère, who in his collection "Collection de meubles et objets de goût" (1805-1807), illustrates several chairs with openwork backs, including some similar to ours (fig. 2 and 7).
