Description
[Archive]. [Vézelay]. Judgement handed down on 16 September 1586 by the Chamber of Petitions of the Parliament of Paris, annulling the donation of 400 arpents of woodland, made in 1575 to the inhabitants of Asquins by Cardinal de Guise, then Abbot of Vézelay. Folio (28 x 23 cm), ink on parchment, 10 folios (i.e. 5 double-leaf folios) (showing scuffing, stains and holes; a quarter of the margin of the last folio and the seal are missing). This donation had been contested by the chapter of Vézelay, the canons asserting that their commendatory abbot’s gift had been made without their consent and deprived them of the income from these woods. After six years of litigation, this judgement by the Parliament of Paris upheld the chapter’s objections by annulling the 1575 donation, restoring the parties to ‘the state in which they were previously’, specifies the boundaries of the woods of Vaux Lannes and Les Fontellets, and orders the community of ‘peasants residing in the town of Asquins to pay the costs’.
