Description
[Archive]. [Vézelay]. Copy of the deliberations, minutes and other documents relating to the parish council of Vézelay Church, from 7 July 1833. 19th century. Folio-sized register, green half-leather binding (binding very worn, interior in good condition, one leaf missing before the first numbered folio). An important document reflecting the history of the parish and the church between 1833 and 1892. It comprises 203 pages written in ink, the first fifty-one of which were formerly numbered and initialled. This document sheds light on the workings of the Parish Council by recording the main decisions it was called upon to make over a period of sixty years. In particular, it contains reproductions of letters written to and received by Count Charles de Montalembert, who, in the 1830s and 1840s, spearheaded the rescue and restoration of the Basilica of Vézelay. It also contains several lists of donors to the Perpetual Adoration, dating from 1866 onwards. Sergent, the senior parish priest, transcribed almost the entire collection and signed at the end of each report; at the end of the volume, several minutes bear multiple signatures. Several loose sheets are attached: - a collection of handwritten notes concerning the parish council (1835–1836), approximately 40 loose in-12 sheets. - A handwritten inventory of the movable property (and papers) of the parish council of the church at Fontenay-sous-Vézelay, 1844, 4 pages in-12 (with some missing pages). - A handwritten letter from Sergent addressed to a bishop in 1836 and ‘never sent’. - The minutes of the establishment of the Way of the Cross in 1855 (2½ pages, in-4°, signatures + one printed leaf).
